[HICAC 2024] Section B: As East Meets West In International Arbitration (coordinated by VIAC)

Alongside the plenary session, VIAC will oversee the coordination of Session B, which will delve into the theme “As East meets West in International Arbitration”. The field of international arbitration sits at the crossroads of diverse legal systems. With globalization accelerating, disputes increasingly involve parties and arbitrators from vastly different legal traditions. Cross-border and investment disputes (including investor-state investment disputes and state-to-state disputes, both contract-based or treaty-based disputes) are inevitable in a widely open economy. While a wave of harmonization efforts is sweeping legal landscapes, practical realities reveal discrepancies in used law, from arbitration agreements to final awards. This "East Meets West" tapestry presents both challenges and opportunities in navigating fair and efficient arbitral proceedings.
