VIAC had a working session with Delegation from Ritsumeikan University (Japan)

On 3rd March 2026, the Vietnam International Arbitration Centre (VIAC) welcomed and held a working session with a delegation from Ritsumeikan University (Japan), facilitated by the Foreign Trade University (FTU). The meeting aimed to provide lecturers and students with insights into the practice of arbitration and alternative dispute resolution (ADR) in Vietnam.
 
 
Ms. Vu Thi Hang, Deputy Director of the VIAC Secretariat, welcomed the delegation from Ritsumeikan University (Japan) to VIAC.

Representing VIAC were Ms. Vu Thi Hang, Deputy Director of the VIAC Secretariat, and Ms. Vu Viet Hang from the Secretariat. The Ritsumeikan University delegation included Professor Yuyama Tomoyuki and Professor Jackson Lachlan Rigby, accompanied by two faculty representatives from the Foreign Trade University and 17 students.

During the session, VIAC representatives delivered an overview of the Centre’s establishment and development, its organizational structure, and its role within Vietnam’s commercial dispute resolution framework. The presentation also addressed the broader landscape of ADR in Vietnam, recent trends in commercial arbitration amid international economic integration, and notable features observed in VIAC’s case practice.

The Secretariat further elaborated on arbitral procedures, the Secretariat’s administrative support throughout proceedings, and the practical competencies required for professionals pursuing careers in arbitration and mediation. The presentation attracted considerable interest from the delegation, particularly students intending to pursue academic research or professional practice in international law.

In the discussion segment, faculty members and students from Ritsumeikan University raised questions concerning the characteristics of commercial disputes in Vietnam, the organization of arbitral hearings, the growing convergence between arbitration and mediation, and career prospects in the ADR field. VIAC representatives provided detailed responses and shared practical perspectives, offering students a comprehensive understanding of the working environment at a professional arbitral institution.

The working session concluded in an open and constructive atmosphere. Through this program, students were able not only to consolidate their academic knowledge but also to gain valuable exposure to arbitration practice in Vietnam, thereby broadening their appreciation of the role and potential of arbitration as a dispute resolution mechanism in an era of deepening globalization and international cooperation.
