On 6th April 2026, a delegation from the eBRAM International Online Dispute Resolution Centre met and engaged in discussions with representatives of the Vietnam International Arbitration Centre (VIAC) – Ho Chi Minh City Branch, regarding the growth trends of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) in the context of digital transformation.

In attendance from eBRAM were Mr. Albert Leung, Acting Chief Executive Officer, and Prof. William Wong, Member of the Technology Advisory Committee. Representing VIAC were Mr. Chau Viet Bac, Deputy Director of the VIAC Ho Chi Minh City Branch, along with representatives from the Secretariat and the Promotion & Business Department.
During the working session, representatives from eBRAM and VIAC engaged in in-depth discussions on the developmental trends of ADR amidst the rapid pace of digital transformation. Both sides observed that the integration of technology in arbitration, alongside the rise of Online Dispute Resolution (ODR) platforms, is becoming a prominent trend in Asia, particularly as cross-border transactions continue to surge. In this context, both Hong Kong and Vietnam are receiving proactive support and attention from their respective governments to foster digital transformation and develop modern dispute resolution mechanisms. This serves as a vital foundation for the effective implementation of ODR initiatives, while simultaneously opening up numerous opportunities to promote regional cooperation and strengthen connectivity between ADR ecosystems.
Mr. Albert Leung - Acting Chief Executive Officer of eBRAM, shared that technological solutions are increasingly asserting their role and demonstrating clear efficacy in enhancing the quality of arbitration and mediation proceedings. Furthermore, eBRAM has developed and deployed the DealMaking platform to facilitate the conclusion of transactions and contracts between enterprises, particularly in light of the surge in cross-border trade. This initiative contributes to dispute prevention and strengthens the efficiency of legal risk management from the initial stages.
Following the discussions on Online Dispute Resolution (ODR) support, Mr. Chau Viet Bac – Deputy Director of VIAC’s Ho Chi Minh City Branch shared insight into the efforts to drive digital transformation within VIAC's operations. As an organization providing dispute resolution services through arbitration, mediation, and other methods in accordance with the law, VIAC has consistently prioritized and allocated resources to researching and optimizing its dispute resolution procedures. Consequently, in June 2024, VIAC officially launched and operationalized VIAC eCase – an Online Case Management and Electronic Filing Platform. This is considered a significant milestone in the application of technology within the Vietnamese arbitral landscape, reflecting the prevailing trend among ADR institutions across the region.
Furthermore, the two sides engaged in discussions regarding the challenges inherent in integrating technology into dispute resolution. Issues such as information security, data management, and the legal validity of digital platforms were identified as critical areas requiring prudent consideration. The importance of upholding fundamental procedural principles and maintaining the human-centric nature of dispute resolution was also emphasized to ensure fairness and the overall reliability of the system. Based on their practical operations, both sides observed that many contracts, particularly within the Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) and startup sectors, lack adequate focus on dispute resolution clauses during the execution phase, leading to increased costs and prolonged resolution times when disputes arise. Through extensive exchange, both sides agreed that the synergy between technology and a legal risk management mindset will play a pivotal role in assisting businesses with dispute prevention in the era of digitalization.
On the basis of the MoU and the discussions held during the meeting, both sides discussed their future cooperation plans, with a focus on strengthening connectivity and coordination in professional activities. Proposals centered on collaborating for initiatives related to technology in ADR, promoting the exchange of expertise, and facilitating access for stakeholders to experience innovative technological solutions. Furthermore, both sides expressed their shared commitment to expanding cooperation through participation in regional forums, events, and joint initiatives.
The working session served as an opportunity for both sides to further solidify their established cooperative foundation while unlocking new collaborative prospects as ADR undergoes a profound transformation alongside technological advancements. Through an open dialogue, the eBRAM International Online Dispute Resolution Centre and the Vietnam International Arbitration Centre (VIAC) reaffirmed the significance of integrating legal expertise, technology, and appropriate governance frameworks. This synergy aims to foster a modern, efficient, and sustainable dispute resolution ecosystem within the region.
